Every GTA 6 budget figure in circulation comes from reporting, estimates or rumour, not from Rockstar or Take-Two. Here is each number and who is behind it; the wider story is in GTA 6 development.
GTA 6 budget: what Rockstar and Take-Two have said
Neither company has published a development budget. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has declined to give a figure and has only said the game was expensive.
The one on-record statement came in Bloomberg’s October 14, 2026 feature, as relayed by other outlets: Rockstar’s head of publishing, Jennifer Kolbe, said the claim that GTA 6 cost more than $1.5 billion is not true. She gave no real figure, and it is unclear whether her answer covers marketing.
How much did GTA 6 cost to make, according to reports?
- More than $1 billion (reported): Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier says GTA 6 likely cost more than $1 billion and is almost certainly the most expensive game ever made.
- More than $1.5 billion (denied): the most repeated claim, rejected by Rockstar’s publishing head.
- $2 billion (unsourced): goes back to 2022 reports and hacker claims with no named source, and sits above Rockstar’s denial line.
- £2.7 billion to £3.7 billion (fan estimate): a YouTuber’s calculation from UK company filings, counting staff costs from 2019 to launch, reported by NME in April 2026.
Put together, Rockstar rejects the claim of more than $1.5 billion, and Bloomberg’s reporting puts the cost above $1 billion. No exact figure has been disclosed.
GTA 6 development cost: the scale behind the estimates
No cost breakdown is public, but these reported figures explain why estimates run high:
- Staff: Bloomberg reported about 4,711 Rockstar employees across 12 offices in October 2026, up from about 2,441 when Red Dead Redemption 2 launched. That is company-wide; see who makes GTA 6.
- Team growth: Dazed reported that the development team has more than doubled since Red Dead Redemption 2, which reportedly had about 1,600 developers.
- Time: Bloomberg dates the first research trip to Miami to 2015; see how long GTA 6 has been in development.
- Animation: Aaron Garbut told the New York Times the game has more than 600,000 hand-made animations, against about 55,000 in GTA 5 and about 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2.
How much did the GTA 6 leak cost Rockstar?
In the 2023 UK court case over the September 2022 hack, Rockstar said the attack cost it about $5 million to recover from, plus thousands of hours of staff time, the BBC reported. The case is covered in who leaked GTA 6.
How much money will GTA 6 make?
Take-Two has released no GTA 6 sales or pre-order numbers. It expects net bookings of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion for its fiscal year from April 2026 to March 2027 and ties that outlook to the launch. Zelnick called pre-order demand “unprecedented and astonishing” in August 2026 but gave no figures.
For scale, Take-Two says GTA 5 has sold in more than 230 million units, and GTA 6 sells at $79.99 and $99.99; see GTA 6 price. Take-Two’s next results come on November 9, 2026.
