GTA 6 gameplay and features: everything confirmed

Rockstar's August 2026 Extended Look and its interviews show GTA 6 as a single-player open world with two leads, Jason and Lucia, store robberies you can do loud or quiet, police who recognise your outfit, airboats and scuba diving, and more than 600,000 hand-made animations. Most of what is known about how GTA 6 plays comes from one video and a handful of interviews. Everything below is from Rockstar’s own footage or its developers’ words, unless it says otherwise. Leaked footage is not used.

What did the GTA 6 Extended Look show?

Rockstar’s “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” premiered on Netflix on August 27, 2026 and reached YouTube six hours later. Netflix said it was captured entirely from in-game PS5 footage. Coverage of the 26-minute video described:

  • Crime: a drug deal that goes wrong and a diner robbery.
  • Getting around: airboats in the swamp, and scuba diving.
  • Combat: a slow-motion aiming ability.
  • Choices: signs of a morality system, though Rockstar has not explained how it works.

A shorter clip of about 20 seconds, credited to Rockstar, aired in a South Park episode on October 28, 2026, with the normal HUD and minimap on screen. Every official video is listed in GTA 6 trailers.

GTA 6 features Rockstar’s developers have described

Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson gave IGN an interview during a July 2026 press demo, published in full on October 7. As summarised by Insider Gaming, he said:

  • Companions: characters with you suggest jobs, or wander off on their own.
  • Police: officers recognise your clothing, and changing your outfit lowers the heat.
  • Robberies: store robberies can be done loud or quiet.
  • Scale: the area shown in the demo was a “tiny” part of the map.

Rockstar Support’s description of the pre-order bonus also points to customisation: the Vintage Vice City Pack includes a car with a garage, outfits, hairstyles and a weapon pattern. See GTA 6 pre-order.

Two playable leads: Jason and Lucia

GTA 6 follows two partners, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar’s story line is that an easy score goes wrong and drags them into a conspiracy across Leonida. Both appear in gameplay footage. Who they are, and the six other people Rockstar profiles, are in GTA 6 characters and GTA 6 story.

How realistic will GTA 6 be?

Rockstar’s leads have given three concrete measures:

  • Animations: Aaron Garbut told the New York Times the game has more than 600,000 hand-made animations, against about 55,000 in GTA 5 and about 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • Interiors: Garbut told Edge the game has an “order of magnitude more interiors” than earlier entries.
  • People on the street: Rockstar built a team focused on making non-player characters behave more realistically, according to coverage of the same interviews.

Where it all happens is covered in GTA 6 map and location.

GTA 6 music and radio

  • Radio: six stations previewed on October 8, 2026, including Flash FM, The Chamber 106.6 and Cocotea FM.
  • Score: composed by Justice and adaptive, changing with how you move through Vice City and Leonida, Rockstar says.
  • The Album: 34 original songs, released with the game on November 19.

What GTA 6 does not have at launch

  • Online: GTA 6 launches as a single-player game; no online mode is announced. See GTA 6 Online.
  • Microtransactions: none in the single-player game, Rob Nelson told previewers in August 2026, and no generative AI was used.
  • 60fps: not promised. Nelson said console builds run at 30fps. See GTA 6 specs.

GTA 6 gameplay and features: common questions

What are the main GTA 6 features?

Two playable leads, robberies you can do loudly or quietly, police who recognise what you wear, companions who suggest jobs, airboats, scuba diving, a slow-motion aiming ability and in-game radio stations. Rockstar has shown or described each of these.

Where can I watch GTA 6 gameplay?

Rockstar's 26-minute Extended Look, released August 27, 2026, is on its YouTube channel and the official GTA VI site. It was captured entirely from in-game PS5 footage. See GTA 6 trailers.
